TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A two-week old elephant took her first steps in public at Lowry Park Zoo Tuesday morning.

The calf was born December 23 around 9:30 p.m.

Visitors at the zoo watched as the young elephant ran around her mother and the two other female elephants -- sometimes tripping along the way.

"I think her curiosity is surpassing her abilities at this point," said Chris Massaro, Animal Department Operations manager for Lowry Park Zoo. "So as she runs out there, she'll trip over her own feet. But she's getting her feet under her, she's doing very well."

The calf's birth is only the second in Lowry Park Zoo's history, and the first born in Tampa from a herd of 11 elephants rescued from Africa nearly a decade ago.
