ATLANTA -
The Atlanta Falcons are attempting to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1999. Jamal Anderson, one of the most famous "Dirty Birds" from that team, returned to the Georgia Dome on Thursday and talked to FOX 5's Marc Teichner about that team's magical season.
Anderson said that he knew the team was good, but fans weren't all-in, which is why he came up with the dance that made him famous.
"To get people's attention, to ignite the imagination," said Anderson. "OK, so we're playing good football and winning games – let's do something else."
As they continued to win, people jumped on the bandwagon. Suddenly, Atlanta had Falcons fever. Even getting around town became an adventure for the team
"I was riding with the lineman and thank God I was, because I was swamped! And I'm not little," said Anderson. "I was like, 'Oh my God, this is crazy!'"
Anderson said the defining moment of the season was a touchdown against San Francisco in the playoffs.
"There is the goal and there no way he's going to stop me, so I stiff-armed him but my momentum is pushing like this and before I hit out of bounds, I just dove," said Anderson. "I am floating out of bounds ..switched the ball and got right inside the pile-on. I probably fell and looked at the referee so quick because I couldn't celebrate until it was a touchdown. That is the first thing in my mind."
That play-- and the entire season -- still puts a smile on Jamal's face.
Anderson says one thing that he's most proud of is changing the way people think about the franchise. No longer could they be called losers. He says that he believes he has been part of the legacy of the team.
"I saw it in everybody's face on every step of the way. To me, being a part of that, I cannot say anything. It's the best. It's the best feeling ever," said Anderson.
Dan Reeves, the coach that led the team to the Super Bowl, also fondly remembers the season. The coach even got into the spirit by doing the "Dirty Bird" dance.
"And this city went crazy. I told them I was going to do the ‘Dirty Bird' downtown Peachtree. I kept my word. I got up about 5 o'clock in the morning, went down to Peachtree and did the 'Dirty Bird,'" said Reeves.
This year's Falcons take on the Seattle Seahawks at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the Georgia Dome.
