WASHINGTON -

The focus turns to the role that video games may play in gun violence, but it's clear where the White House stands on this, even after meeting with gun rights advocates.

They may have been sitting around the same table, but there was a wide gulf as Vice President Joe Biden began to meet with the National Rifle Association and other groups that oppose White House gun control efforts.

"There's gotta be some common ground here, to not solve every problem, but diminish the probability of what we've seen in these mass shootings will occur," said Biden.

The NRA said they walked away disappointed and other who attended what became a closed-door session say the White House agenda was clear.

"We had the opportunity to speak and I think there were a lot of things that we agreed on, but at the end he chose instead to focus on our  differences," said Johanna Reeves, Executive Director of the FireArms Import/Export Roundtable (F.A.I.R.) Trade Group.

The White House has made no secret of the fact that the President wants a new ban on assault-style weapons, as well as a crackdown on large capacity magazines in the wake of last month's school shooting rampage in Connecticut.

Absent that, he may try to clamp down on gun ownership through executive action, whether Congress agrees or not.

Pro-Second Amendment groups are pushing for a greater focus on mental health issues and the role of violence in the media.

And gun rights groups are planning a gun appreciation day next Saturday to help rally support -- a day before President Obama is sworn in for a second term.

The time frame here is pretty brief.  The Vice President will present his recommendations to the President on Tuesday.
