CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 27-year-old cab driver ran a red light early Friday in the Lincoln Park area, setting off a chain reaction that led to a pedestrian being struck by another cab before it crashed into a liquor store, leaving three people hospitalized, police said.
The accident occurred in the 2400 block of North Ashland Avenue about 1:10 a.m., police said. Witnesses told police that a cab, a 2010 Dodge Stratus, had a green light and as it headed north on Ashland, it was T-boned by a Toyota Prius taxi, which ran a red light, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
That forced the Stratus onto the parkway, where it struck a 21-year-old female pedestrian before crashing into a liquor store. The woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious but stable condition, Mirabelli said.
A passenger in the Prius -- a 25-year-old man -- and the driver of the second cab -- a 32-year-old man -- were taken in stable condition to Illinois Masonic, News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said. The second cabbie has since been released, Mirabelli said.
The driver of the Prius, Kakajan Islamov of the 5400 block of N. East River Road, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avid an accident, Mirabelli said. He is due in traffic court Feb. 6 at 9 a.m.
