Keep your home warm and energy efficient during the freeze

PHOENIX -

When temperatures get this low, most valley residents opted to stay home and stay warm.

Making sure your place is weather proofed and energy efficient is key with weather like this.

Robert West came to Home Depot with one purchase in mind -- pipe covers.

"It's just being cold outside and stuff..just being prepared," he said.

Margarita Aguillera is taking the same precaution -- wrapping her pipes so water inside doesn't freeze.

"This morning, I woke up and the water hose was frozen and I forgot to put it on a low drip, so I'm going to try to warm it up a bit and have it ready overnight," she said.

"We are really selling cart loads and cart loads of pipe insulation so we bumped up the order we are going to have more coming in."

Energy expert Duane Birch says the inexpensive foam tubes have been flying off the shelves ever since the temperatures dropped, along with items like insulation and outlet sealers -- some tricks valley residents can use to keep the heat in.

"I turned my faucet on a little bit, let the water run just a little bit overnight."

65 percent of your energy goes through your windows and out your attic and that's why our experts say a simple sheet of plastic won't cut it when temperatures are this cold.

"You're wasting time and money and you're going to have to take it back down weather stripping you can use forever," said Birch.

Birch says most of the supplies cost just a few bucks, but will probably save hundreds in the long run.
