Security barriers approved for Times Square

NEW YORK (AP) - Times Square will be getting security barriers intended to prevent terrorists and vehicles from entering its pedestrian plazas.

The installation of stainless-steel bollards and granite barriers was approved by New York City's Design Commission last week.

They're meant to keep vehicles from driving up on the pedestrian plazas between West 42nd and West 47th streets.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told The New York Times among the threats are drivers who lose control of their vehicles; drunken drivers and would-be bombers who park vehicles with explosive in the square.

The mayor's office said the barriers will not change the current traffic routes through the area.

The installation of the devices is expected to be completed this year.
