The VUE on Robinson and Rosalind in downtown Orlando is one of the more upscale condominium high rises in the region. It seems like the most dog-friendly too, as it's the only one with a rooftop dog walk.
But apparently, not all pets and owners are appreciating their perk, and they're leaving a stinky mess behind.
Nestled on the 5th floor, with the rest of the amenities, is a dog walk that is complete with Astroturf. The pooches can run and do their business. It's part of what attracted Phillip Long to The VUE.
"They keep poop bags at two locations, a trash can, pooper scoopers, a water hose you can even wash your dog here," said Long. "They make it so we can all exist here happily and cleanly together."
Well, except for a few lazy dog owners who are allowing their dog to leave some unwanted presents behind.
"We've had a little difficulty getting it cleaned up on a regular basis," said The VUE Manager Lisa Mason.
To curb that problem, they're hosting a "Yappy Hour" next month, where they will collect DNA samples from resident canines.
"Just an easy little swab of the mouth. They'll get a treat afterwards. Anybody who doesn't clean up after them self, we'll be able to see which pet it is and hold them responsible," Mason said.
Starting in February, whenever someone leave's a mess behind, a sample will be taken and sent to Poo Prints, a company that will match the dog's leavings to their DNA. When the results come back, that pooch's owner will be fined $100 by the HOA.
So far, condo owners and residents at The VUE seem okay with that. "Haven't had one negative comment so far," said Mason.
Long and his beloved his Palmeranians, "The Pom Poms," think can't start soon enough. "I think it's amazing. I can't wait. They'll bet he first at the swab party," said Long. He and the property manager believe that's the only way they can keep the dog walk nice for the pets and their people.
Mason tell us she hopes just knowing that what's now "anonymous pet waste" will soon be become "evidence" will be enough to have the few lazy dog owners in their building cleaning up their acts.
