Teacher inspires Inman MS jazz band

ATLANTA -

A band at Inman Middle School is expressing their appreciation for the art of jazz. Jazz is nothing like today's popular music, but the band members say jazz is not only the music they listen to, but it's the music that moves them.

The students credit their teacher, Arnessa Woods, for instilling their love of the music genre.

Reading from sheet music by Miles Davis, the jazz band at Inman Middle School got into the groove. The hip cats weren't around when jazz was in its heyday.

"I love it. I just get in the zone, I guess," said 7th grade student Ebet Lansing.

The band is a departure from the usual school band, and the kids say they wouldn't have it any other way.

"It's really fun to be able to learn about that era of jazz music," said 8th grade student Chase Kleber.

Lansing says the music is fun and upbeat, and she likes it.

The woman leading the inspired crew is Woods, who admits jazz wasn't exactly her first love.

"When I was growing up my dad would play it and I would go, ugh, why do we have to listen to that, but now I find myself just really into it," said Woods.

Her students can tell. They say her love of the art form inspires them.

"She connects with you. She's really funny and makes class fun," said Lansing.

Kleber says Woods is a type of teacher that provides hands-on learning

Woods even jumps in a jam session every once in a while. It's her way of letting the kids know that hitting the perfect note is nice, but appreciating an art form is so much better.

"I want them to have that passion for listening and performing and playing. And take that, and later on their lives when they have kids, put that in their kids. I don't want them to let it go," Woods said.

The band also has a commitment to service. Every year, they play at different Toys for Tots collection sites around the city.
