NJ school safety training video about armed intruders

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

The Bergen County, N.J., Prosecutor's Office has created a school safety training video to help teachers and school police know what to do in an emergency. The video is designed to help teachers if they would ever have to respond to an armed gunman inside the school.

The most important things teachers are taught is to turn out the lights, lock the classroom door, and keep the students calm and quiet.

Police officers studied school shootings that took place during the last 10 years to create this safety training video designed to help teachers and police officers. They hope to learn from mistakes made in the past.

Production of this video was underway well before the Newtown, Conn., school shooting in which a gunman killed 20 first graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli has turned over this video to the New Jersey Department of Education for review and to make any necessary improvements. He hopes to be able to show it to whatever school district is interested.

Molinelli has also offered to visit schools in Bergen County and offer on-site safety tips. So far seven school districts have asked for his help.
