Resident in Chattooga County said they are dealing with rainfall fatigue after several days of unending showers. Deputies closed one road after a man rescued an elderly couple from floodwaters.
Matthew Vinson said he was driving on Monday night when he saw a truck that had slid off the road and was sinking in the swollen waters of the Chattooga River. When he swam towards the truck, he found a husband and wife in their 70s. Vinson was able to pull both of them to safety.
"As I'm out there in the water trying to get to them, he's up on the window sill of the truck, saying, ‘take my wife first, she can't swim.' And she says, ‘no, no, take my husband first,'" said Vinson.
Vinson said that he got to the couple just in time.
"My wife told me right that after I pulled him out, that the truck went all the way under," Vinson.
Sheriff's deputies said they're keeping an eye on several spots and are ready to evacuate if needed.
"Making sure the residents are safe, making sure everybody has a way out in case the weather was to go worse," said Chief Deputy Kevin Wood of the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office.
Emergency workers say it will take at least three days for the water to recede.
