`American Idol` Season 12 kicks off in New York City: Zwecker

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Season 12 of "American Idol" kicked off with the New York auditions. It promises to be a very edgy season, especially with new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban joining "Idol" veteran Randy Jackson.

Nicki Minaj says this year is a season with more girl talent compared to the boys.

"Chicago was a very, very talented place," Minaj said. "I absolutely think it's going to be a girls year. Most of my favorites right now are girls."

Of course, there has been lots of buzz about the big feuding between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj--which Keith Urban artfully described to Entertainment Reporter Bill Zwecker last week in Los Angeles.

"When you have four people who get put on a dance floor, that's kinda it and then saying 'okay, dance together--the four of you, go.' 'Oh, what steps are we doing?' 'Oh, we're not going to tell you any of the choreography, just go.' We step on a few feet, we figure it out, and before you know it, we've got a groove, a flow," Keith Urban said. "I think we're in the flow now."

As for host Ryan Seacrest, who has seen 11 seasons of previous "American Idol" contestants, says this 12th season will bring us both great talent and heartwarming stories--especially from Chicago.

"I just put my voice on the Chicago episode to narrate it and there's some great talent but there is a really emotional story of a young girl who had an eating disorder and music essentially saved her and she has a fantastically emotional audition, so I think there will be a little bit of everything in that episode," Seacrest told Bill Zwecker.

On Thursday night FOX 32 will have a behind-the-scenes look at the Chicago auditions, plus exclusive interviews with two contestants who are going to Hollywood.
