Infant remains in critical condition after SUV goes into Lake Minnetonka

Posted: Updated:

Friday afternoon, a car went through the ice on Lake Minnetonka under the bridge between Priest Bay and Halsted Bay on County Road 44.

A family of four was in the car when it went under. They are identified as Jonathan Markle, who was driving, his wife Amanda, their two-year-old daughter Isabelle, and 9-month-old Tabitha. They are all from Minnetrista, and authorities say, "they know the lake."

A retired volunteer firefighter who lives nearby was one of the first people on scene, and he helped pull the parents and toddler from the car.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Offices says the 9-month-old was rescued from the car after being submerged for 15 to 20 minutes. The girl was transported to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Rescuers had to take off some of their cold water protection gear, to get into the SUV the infant was in and cut her free from her car seat.

The other family members in the car, including 2-year-old Isabelle are expected to survive.

The sheriff's offices says the ice under the bridge was thinner than the rest of the lake, but they said thin ice warnings had been posted.

Investigators are waiting for blood test results to see if Jonathan Markle was driving under the influence as he took his family home from a restaurant on the lake.

Two other cars went through the ice on Lake Minnetonka Friday evening. Neither of those incidents resulted in injuries.
