One woman dead, another in critical condition after shootings
COCOA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Cocoa Police are trying to figure out who shot two women in a Cocoa apartment complex. Officers say 911 calls flooded in around noon after people, who live in the complex in the 1500 block of Clearlake Road, heard multiple gunshots.
When police arrived they say they found a woman, who appeared to be in her 60s, on the ground in front of an apartment. She had been shot in the head and the upper torso. Inside the house, officers say they found a woman in her late 20s or early 30s who had been shot to death. And there were more terrifying details.
Cocoa Police spokesperson Barbara Matthews says, "There were either 3 or 4 children in the home at the time. The children did not see anything. They heard what was going on, they got scared and they ran."
They ended up and a neighbor's apartment and were not physically hurt. Matthews says they children do not completely understand what happened yet.
The shootings sparked a major manhunt in the area around the apartment complex. Much of it was centered on nearby Cambridge Elementary. Police with assault rifles searched the school grounds using tracking dogs while the Sheriff's helicopter circled overhead. They were not able to track down a suspect but, they did find a handgun. Matthews says they do not know yet if it is the gun used to shoot the woman.
At last check, police said they did not know who shot the women or why.
