Brevard parents make final push to prevent school closures

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

For some Brevard County parents, Monday's federal holiday was far from a day off.

With a school board vote looming today on whether to close four county schools, members of the group Save Brevard County Schools rallied at several Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, hoping to make them aware of possible cuts to the school district.

"We didn't have a Christmas break, we didn't have a New Year's break, and we're not having a break today," Christine McClure said.

"We're trying to educate the public about the possible school closures that they're voting on tomorrow [Tuesday] and also the other cuts to programs that the school board wants to make," McClure said.

At stake along with the possible school closures are more than 400 jobs -- many of them teachers.

Parents have spent the past month marching before school board meetings and making their voices heard.

They also have been collecting signatures from parents for a special election to extend a .25 mil tax that expires in June, in addition to adding a .25 cent sales tax, estimated to generate almost $25 million a year.

But for now, the group's main focus is today's school board meeting.

"We have people who are writing speeches. We're allowed to give some speeches tomorrow during the meeting, but certainly, this is the last big push before they vote," McClure said.

The schools that could close are Gardendale, Sea Park and South Lake elementary schools, as well as Clearlake Middle School.

Today's meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Board members will vote on each school individually.
