Jury sentences woman in child's dehydration death

DALLAS -

A Dallas County jury handed down a sentence Tuesday for Tina Alberson, the woman who admitted withholding water from her 10-year-old stepson until he collapsed and died.

Alberson will spend 85 years in prison, jurors decided.

Jonathon James died in July 2011 from dehydration. The 44-year-old Alberson admitted she limited his water and forced him to stand on an X on the kitchen floor near a window as part of his punishment for an infraction.

She was convicted Friday of a second-degree felony injury to a child. Although the charge had a maximum sentence of 20 years, prior convictions increased her punishment.

She stood stone faced as the verdict was read. Jonathan's family members embraced one another.

"Oh, I was elated," said Krista Bishop, his mother.

She said she wasn't surprised Alberson didn't make eye contact.

"That's Tina. It's Tina. She never takes responsibility for anything," Bishop said.

Prosecutors said the punishment sends a message.

"They jury listened to the evidence and they gave what they thought was appropriate. Eighty-five years is a life sentence. And it's not five, which is what the defense attorney was asking for," said Marci Curry, a Dallas County assistant district attorney.
