Thousands protest 1973 Roe v. Wade decision at state Capitol

ATLANTA -

Thousands of people gathered at the Georgia State Capitol on Tuesday to protest the 40th anniversary of the  U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Roe versus Wade decision.

The landmark decision was made in 1973
, and gave women the constitutional right to an abortion in some circumstances, and prevented states from banning it.

Police estimated about 3,000 people turned out along Washington Street. They heard speeches and conducted a quiet march through downtown Atlanta streets.

Activists supporting abortion rights stood on a nearby street corner.

As opponents here and elsewhere called for more limits on abortion, the National Organization for Women planned a candlelight vigil at the Supreme Court in Washington to observe this 40th anniversary.

In the four decades since Roe vs. Wade, a series of court decisions have narrowed the scope of the ruling and many states have worked to establish new restrictions for abortion providers.
