With the temperatures in the New York City area dipping below 20 degrees this week, the ASPCA wants pet owners to make sure their animal companions stay warm.
"It is important to always walk your dog on a leash, but when it snows this becomes critical," said Dr. Louise Murray, the vice president of the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. "During a snowstorm, dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears her ID tags."
Here are more cold-weather safety tips for caring for animals:
Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter; a full coat provides warmth
Be sure to completely dry a dog after bathing it and before taking it out for a walk.
Consider getting a coat or sweater for short-haired dogs
Never leave a dog or cat alone in a car
Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep; off the floor and away from all drafts
