Knife found in 5th grader's backpack, arrest made

Posted: Updated:

A valley 5th grader has been booked into juvenile detention after threatening to stab another student at school for "snitching."

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested the 10-year-old student at Frank Elementary on Tuesday.

Deputies were called to the Guadalupe school by administrators, who heard of the plot and found the student in possession of a 4-inch knife in his backpack.

The 10-year-old admitted he took the knife to school on Tuesday with the intention of stabbing a schoolmate in the stomach, according to MCSO. There was also a black beanie found in the backpack, which he was going to disguise himself with.

"Here we go again, another incident in our schools," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "He was angry at another student for reporting him to teachers for bullying and so on."

The 5th grader tried to get classmates to help him, but they ended up turning him in.

He was booked into juvenile detention on charges of threatening and intimidating, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and disruption of an educational facility.

Parents were not pleased that the school failed to send a letter home with their kids on Tuesday.

"What if it did happen. What if someone got hurt?" said parent Valerie Gonzalez.

"I have two kids that go to school here and I had no idea that anything had happened," said Liz Everett.

"Email. Phone call. A letter. Something," said Ernest Verdugo.

The boy's name won't be released unless he is charged as an adult. The district told us he has been suspended.

In a separate incident Wednesday, a student at George Gervin Prep Academy was taken into custody Wednesday after threatening to kill another student over an iPod.
