The attorney representing Todd "MJ" Schnitt in the trial with Bubba "the Love Sponge Clem" was arrested on DUI charges Wednesday night in Tampa.
Charles Philip Campbell Jr., MJ's attorney, was taken into custody at Cass Street and Tampa Street around 10 p.m. by officers in Tampa.
According to the arrest report, police spotted him violating the right of way of another vehicle, then "observed him to have red/glassy eyes with a distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath."
The 64-year-old denied a blood-alcohol test and was arrested. He was released Thursday morning after posting $500 bond, according to jail records. In 2008, he was also arrested for DUI.
Campbell is representing MJ against his radio rival. On Thursday morning, the judge called in attorneys and granted a delay in the trial.
The jury was told testimony will resume Friday.
"I'm shocked that the case was continued," Bubba's attorney, Steven Diaco, told FOX 13 Thursday. "I feel horrible for this jury that has been sequestered and pulled from their jobs, their lives, their families."
Diaco said he didn't understand why Schnitt's other attorneys weren't suited to handle the case.
"I'm disappointed, but it's out of my control," he said.
On his radio show, Bubba said he was "a target."
"Why does everyone shoot for me?" he said. "Why is everyone always gunning for me."
Late Thursday, Campbell's law firm issued the following statement:
"The DUI charge against attorney Phil Campbell is certainly a serious matter. We have a high level of respect for law enforcement and the legal process. However, this development has nothing to do with Mr. and Mrs. Schnitt or their current defamation trial. We will continue to advocate for Mr. and Mrs. Schnitt's rights and have the utmost confidence in Mr. Campbell and our entire legal team as they continue to provide high-level legal counsel in this case."
