ATLANTA -
As freezing rain threatens for Friday, the world's busiest airport isn't taking any chances. Crews and deicing equipment are standing by at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport just in case.
FOX 5's Justin Gray took a behind-the-scenes look at how airport crews are preparing for the possibility of winter weather. General Manager Louis Miller showed Gray the parts of the airport you normally don't see. Crews are setting up a snow desk to coordinate their response to the potential storm along with the airlines and the FAA inside the tower.
Deicing trucks are also lined up and ready to go on the tarmac. The key, Miller said, is to prepare for the worst and hope it doesn't come.
More than 160,000 pounds of deicing mixture is on hand, and 15 snow plows are ready to clear the runways at any time. Even two years ago when Atlanta was socked with a winter storm, airport officials always had three of their five runways open.
Airport officials believe they are ready for Friday, regardless of what happens. They had a last-minute conference call to coordinate with the airlines on Thursday afternoon.
