Group raises money to fight cervical cancer

ATLANTA -

It's been called the preventable cancer, but too many women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. This weekend the Spirit Foundation will take to the streets hoping to put an end to the disease, and help those who are battling through it.

Kathy Hageman likes to take takes a short walk. On Saturday she'll be walking a lot further. Hageman and hundreds of others will take part in the 5th Annual Walk for Hope. The 5K family walk takes place at Atlantic Station and raises money for the foundation, which combats cervical cancer.

"All of the profits go to providing free care and treatment for women who are under insured, unemployed or homeless," said Hageman.

She knows just how important screening and proper treatment can be. Almost five years ago she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cervical cancer,

"I had to undergo a hysterectomy.  I was diagnosed at 36.  I still hoped to have children. So that was two big things I had to come to terms with. I had cancer, and I wasn't going to be able to have children," said Hageman.

With the help of a support group and quality doctors, Kathy has been cancer free since her operation.

"I was able to save my life," Hageman said.

She wants other women to be able to do the same, so Kathy got involved in the Spirit Foundation. Most of the group's money is spent in the metro area, but it also teaches doctors in developing nations about how to battle the disease.

"Cervical cancer is called the preventable cancer because between good screening and the vaccine, it really is preventable," said Hageman.

The walk takes place Saturday at 9 a.m. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. You can sign up at Atlantic Station's Central Park or online by clicking here.
