Jury delivers guilty verdict in Celebration murder trial
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
An Osceola County jury has found a man guilty in the first murder to happen in Celebration, the quiet community built by Disney.
It took that jury a little under seven hours to convict David Murillo of second-degree murder, a verdict that ended an emotional week of testimony. Murillo simply hung his head when he heard his fate.
Prosecutors said Murillo killed Matteo Giovandetti back in 2010, which marked the Celebration's first homicide. Authorities said Murillo was drinking at the victim's condominium over the Thanksgiving weekend, when they got into an argument that ended up with Giovandetti, 58, dead.
They said Murillo killed Giovandetti with a hatchet and shoelace before stealing his car, coin collection and iPad.
The second-degree murder charge means Murillo will not receive a mandatory life sentence. His attorney will present evidence to the court to reduce his sentencing, which will take place in February.
