Plane leaving Chandler airport goes off runway

Posted: Updated:

A plane leaving Chandler's Stellar Airpark didn't make it off the runway Friday night.

A Cirrus SR20 went past the runway, slid into some gravel, and broke through a chain link fence next to a frontage road about 6 p.m. Friday. It ended up stopping just several feet from the Loop 202.

The experienced pilot and his passenger walked away without any serious injuries.

The incident appears to be weather-related. According to the airport manager, the aircraft hydroplaned on the wet runway.

"I think it's just like driving down the road and hitting black ice, off you go. You know these kinds of things can happen when you get weather and water and it's nighttime," said airport manager Joe Martin.

The plane is registered to Cloud Aviation LLC in Mesa. The runway at Stellar Airpark is 3,913 feet.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
