School bus drivers, matrons cross picket lines

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Replacement bus drivers and matrons are running some public school bus routes in NYC as a strike was in its ninth day.

A heavy police presence could be seen at a bus depot in Travis, Staten Island Tuesday morning where striking workers had assembled.

It is the first time the buses have been rolling since the strike began. Approximately 30 buses left the depot by 7 a.m.

The drivers are members of United Service Workers Local 355 who work for Staten Island Bus, according to company officials.

The drivers and matrons received an emergency waiver from the Department of Education after completing CPR training on Monday.

Members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 and bus company representatives attempted to hammer out a deal t Gracie Mansion on Monday. The only deal reportedly reached was to agree that Mayor Michael Bloomberg join the negotiations.

Drivers and matrons are asking for job security as the city puts contracts with the bus companies out for bidding.

City officials have said job protection is illegal.
