We're hearing the flood of 911 calls that came in right after a chopper went down in a Mesa neighborhood last week. It was quite a scene for the crowd of witnesses who saw it.
You can hear the panic and amazement in the callers' voices -- not over just the crash, but also over the sight of the pilot who walked away with barely a scratch.
"A helicopter just went down on Lazona and 1st Street!"
"Yeah a helicopter just crashed in front of my house."
One witness after another dialed 911 after seeing a homemade helicopter hit the ground.
"I just saw a single man's helicopter, looked like he was going down behind our building."
"He was circling, he was in trouble big time."
"It was having troubles and making really horrible noises and kept circling and finally we heard it crash."
"I'm a couple blocks away but we saw it go down."
"I'm not sure, I just saw it crash and I can't see anybody."
Witnesses ran to try and help the pilot -- later identified as Joe Goetz. He was headed to Falcon Field from Chandler.
"I'm actually going to run up to it and see if the guys ok… there is somebody inside it. The guys safe, he's out he's standing he's ok!"
"He's conscious, alert, breathing normally?"
"So he's out and walking around, a little bit, I think you better send someone here quick."
Even firefighters were amazed that the pilot was able to land that helicopter the way he did.
He wasn't hurt and he didn't hurt anyone on the ground.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
