SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Sanford police on Wednesday arrested a man they are calling a dangerous criminal who is behind a recent string of shootings in the area.
The search began Tuesday evening after officers were called to Orion Way for a report of a fight. Sanford Police Capt. James McAuliffe said Eric Menefee, 24, and Albert Thompson, 21, fled from officers after they were seen throwing two guns into a car.
"Turns out the vehicle that he threw the gun into was a stolen vehicle," said Capt. McAuliffe.
Thompson was arrested shortly after the incident. Menefee was taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Primera and Lake Mary Blvd.
Capt. McAuliffe said Menefee is behind a string of shootings that occurred in Sanford in the last month involving AK47s.
Both Menefee and Thompson have been booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility. They were arrested on outstanding warrants, but authorities said additional drug and firearm charges are pending.
