Golf season one of the busiest for vasectomies

Posted: Updated:

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is this weekend. The big event draws hundreds to the greens, but thousands more watch the tournament on TV-- and some men apparently plan an important surgery around this tournament.

It's a rite of passage for some men.

A vasectomy is a minor surgery. Guys will need several days of recovery, and doctors say men schedule the surgery around the Open so they can make the most of their down time.

Doctors are working overtime on male patients who use this annual event as an excuse to get a vasectomy.

"March worked out just right because it was between when I came down for golf and softball season," says Curtis Cobbler.

Curtis Cobbler wanted to recover from his vasectomy while watching some very important tournaments.

He says that's a normal thing to do among guys – and urologist Dr. Al Borhan confirms.

"I have been the busiest I have been in years."

Dr. Borhan is performing more vasectomies this week than in the past year.

"You get a trifecta. You have the Super Bowl, Waste Management Open and the UFC fight which will be a big deal," he says.

The surgery takes 15 minutes, but men get three to five days to recover -- or for some, like Scott Bradford -- who planned his vasectomy around the college football bowls -- quality sports watching time.

"The missus took the kids away and I got to kick my feet up and watch TV all day," says Bradford.

The men we talked to recommend others get the surgery around their favorite sport, but they offer a warning.

"Never make the wife mad, if she is ok then absolutely," says Cobbler.

Dr. Borhan says March madness is his other busiest time of the year for vasectomies.
