Card Cubby: Central Florida woman's invention takes off

Posted: Updated:

Cluttered, cramped, and clueless: You can't seem to find anything in your wallet when you need it.

But a Central Florida woman says she solved that problem, and now her frustration has turned fruitful.

Fox 35's Lauren Johnson introduces us to the inventor of the Card Cubby.

Wendy Krepak has become an expert on how to transform your wallet from cluttered to clean in a matter of minutes.

"Think mini-Rolodex," Krepak said. "B, there's my Barnes and Noble card. C, there's my Costco card. So, it's alphabetized and organized, so you have them with you. You're saving money, because you have them with you. You're not leaving them at home, which is a really big problem."

It was her own persistent problem that got Krepak thinking.

"I was always losing my gift cards, and my frequent buyer cards, and my discount cards," she said.

The commercial real-estate agent-turned-entrepreneur says she searched for something to help her get organized. When her search came up empty, she got creative.

"And I found this little camera case, and I grabbed some Rolodex cards and I put it in it. And it was really ugly, but it worked really well."

Some people took notice of her makeshift invention, and all of the questions planted a seed.

"I took it to the biggest patent attorney in Orlando, and he said it's a great idea -- let's patent it," Krepak said.

That was 2009. Production on the Card Cubby started slow and small, to see whether other women would buy into her idea.

"I wasn't sure there would be a market for it, or what the price would be, or anything," Krepak said.

An advertisement in Real Simple magazine happened around the same time she met a woman with connections to QVC. Then, People magazine featured the Card Cubby in their holiday gift guide.

"That was insane," Krepak said. "We did not have enough product. We had our whole family at the table, and we were filling orders. We did over $100,000 in a month and a half."

Then, in 2010, Krepak and her husband were both laid off from their real-estate jobs, with no severance and the loss of six-figure incomes. Refusing to fall victim to the recession and seeing promise in her dream, they cleaned out their 401(k)s to pursue the new family business.

"It's been tough, and its a lot of work," she said. "We work all day long. But I enjoy it; I really love it."

She has been cashing in on her idea since then, helping people turn a mess into something more meaningful and useful.
