She was a King College Prep student who was shot to death in Kenwood, just days after the marjorette's band performed at an event leading up to the president's inauguration.
Pendleton and her friends sought shelter from the rain Tuesday afternoon, under a canopy in a park close to the school. She had just finished her exams, and was dreaming of a summer trip to Paris.
Someone opened fire on the group, and Pendleton as fatally shot. Her family is devastated, especially her mother, Cleopatra, her father, Nate and her 10-year-old brother.
Pendleton was a girl who seemed to be doing everything right - everything she could to make the foundation for a good life - in a city where gun violence is so prevalent.
Her tragic death made national headlines Wednesday, as Chicago gun and gang violence continues to escalate. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Police Supt. Garry McCarthy and other national leaders have spoken to the girl's murder, saying something must be done – action must be taken.
The Obama administration has a policy that requires the administration to respond to any petition that gets more than 100,000 signatures.
The president issued a statement offering his condolences to the Pendleton family on Wednesday, as he continues to work with Congress on developing gun safety legislation.
