Altamonte Springs police are trying to hunt down a man whom they said shot another man in the head Thursday night at an apartment complex. The two men met online and decided to meet for dinner before the shooting happened, according to investigators.
The incident happened in the parking lot of the Oaks of Spring Valley apartments off Wymore Road shortly before midnight. Officers said 22-year-old Jermaine Peacock was shot in the head during an argument near the victim's car.
Detectives talked to Peacock Friday afternoon on the phone. They said he told them that he met the suspect online and they were meeting at the apartment complex to go to dinner. Police said the victim does not live at the apartment complex. Detectives said the suspect was trying to steal Peacock's car and when Peacock tried to get his keys back, the suspect shot him.
The man stole Peacock's cell phone but dropped the car keys and ran away. Police dogs attempted to track down the suspect, but they lost his trail. Peacock ran to a nearby apartment and two women helped him until an ambulance arrived.
Dave Gabriel lives in the apartment complex. He said he heard the shot and saw police officers and an ambulance rush into the complex. Gabriel is relieved his neighbors did not get shot.
"There are all kinds of kids playing on their bicycles every day. What happens when they get hit by a car by someone speeding off or a stray bullet hits somebody?" he asked.
Detectives hope to find out more about the suspect through the website where the two men met. The police incident report said Peacock told detectives he can not remember his log in information.
