Man walks across U.S. raising money for pancreatic cancer

PHOENIX -

One man is marching across the nation to tell people about pancreatic cancer.

You could say BJ Timoner is living out your average man-turns-41-and-decides-to-traverse-the-nation-on-foot story, but his quest has a purpose: to eradicate pancreatic cancer.

"I'm getting a fantastic response. People give me a little 'tootleoot' on their horn, they offer me food or a little money for my charity, a place to stay...people are very much inspired by it," said Timoner.

When BJ was just 5-years-old, his father passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 41.

Two years ago, at the same age, BJ grabbed a backpack and a tent and crossed the
country on foot. He raised $25,000 for the Lustgarten Foundation in the process.

This year, he's doing it again.

"It's been adventurous. I camp semi-legally, you know, sometimes it's just crawling over the train tracks and finding a spot where no one can see me, and getting up in the morning and doing it again," said Timoner.

450 miles down from his starting point at the Santa Monica Pier on the West Coast, he hopes to finish six months from now on Long Island, a mere 2400 miles away.

So far on this trip, he's raised $5,000. He's seen some sights and met some amazing people along the way who now know how devastating pancreatic cancer can be. They have vowed to help fight it in their own way.

"It's a lot of work but it was the work I was born to do. I'm really happy to be out here. I'm much more comfortable in my own skin when I'm doing my walks and it's been great," said Timoner.

BJ plans on finishing up in July and has thought about making a trip back across the U.S. and southern states.
