Subway station won't be named after Mayor Koch

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Despite what Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., and other elected officials had hoped, the MTA will not rename a subway station on the Upper East Side for former Mayor Ed Koch, who died last week.

The MTA said the agency does not rename subway stations after people, according to a New York Post.

Yet Maloney and City Councilman Stephen Levi held a press conference at the East 77 Street and Lexington Avenue station calling on the MTA to change its policy.

Maloney said Koch called it his favorite stop on the subway, where he often campaigned. 

City officials introduced legislation in the council chambers to rename the station after one of New York's most famous politicians who dedicated his life to the New York City.

Earlier, an aide to Maloney told the Post it was "a done deal."
