Wilmington Officer Shot In Face After Traffic Stop

Posted: Updated:

A Wilmington Police officer with nearly three years on the force is in serious but stable condition at Christiana Hospital after being shot in the face Sunday afternoon.

Police told FOX29 the officer and his partner pulled a vehicle over, which suddenly fled.  They say the officers then followed the vehicle to the 1200 block of Peach Street in Wilmington's Southbridge neighborhood.

That's when investigators said at least one suspect opened fire, hitting the officer in the face. He was awaiting surgery as of Sunday night.

Police are questioning two suspects and are interviewing witnesses.

No motive has been released so far and the officer's name has not been released.

Mayor Dennis Williams visited the officer in the hospital and released this statement:

"I am deeply troubled that an officer was injured in the line of duty.  I commend his bravery and ask the residents of our great city to pray with me for this officer, his family and all the men and women who risk their lives daily to keep our city safe.

As Mayor I am committed to ridding our city of anyone that threatens the safety of our neighborhoods.  I've said that "I'm not in the business of Hugging Thugs!"  And that is exactly what I mean. Heinous acts such as this will not be tolerated. Our citizens will live in peace."

Mayor Williams has called a 10am press conference for Monday morning where more details of the incident will be released.
