Bill banning new jughandles in NJ advances

Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A bill that would ban the construction of new traffic jughandles in New Jersey has cleared a state Senate committee.

But the sponsor, Ocean County Republican James Holzapfel, was asked Monday to meet with the state Transportation Department to see if exemptions should be allowed.

The legislation next goes to the full Senate for consideration.

Holzapfel has been trying since 2003 to get a ban considered. He says the "Jersey left" can cause rush-hour nightmares. He also says jughandles take up too much land.

New Jersey has hundreds of jughandles that provide indirect left turns. The state doesn't know exactly how many or when the first one was built.

The state Transportation Department says jughandles can be helpful, preventing turning vehicles from backing up on main roadways and slowing traffic.
