Zimmerman hearing takes place on Trayvon Martin's birthday - FOX 35 News Orlando

Attorneys for George Zimmerman will try to get his murder trial delayed at a hearing on Tuesday, what would have been Trayvon Martin's 18th birthday.

It was nearly a year ago when the teenager was shot and killed by George Zimmerman.  While the debate continues on what happened that night, Martin's parents plan to celebrate their son's birthday in South Florida.

"They wanted to have a birthday party, as opposed to memorializing February 26th. They want to celebrate Trayvon's birth," said family attorney Natalie Jackson.  "It's a peace and love walk. The walk is to support and facilitate children thinking and problem solving with their minds, instead of with guns."

Jackson said the late teenager became a symbol for justice in the eyes of many, adding "He gave a lot of people a voice that they didn't know they had. They thought you needed money to be politically involved. Thought you needed power. But here you had people tweeting with no money. You had students marching with no money and they were able to provide themselves sort of with a sense of justice."

The defense says Zimmerman should not have been arrested in the shooting, because it was an act of self-defense.  As Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, attempts to delay the trial, Jackson says, "We'd like to get it over because the Martin Family wants to be done with this saga."

Back in November, O'Mara accused the Martin family attorneys of profiting from the case, but Jackson says she's been volunteering her time. "No one's paying for our travel and speaking engagements."

Meanwhile, Jackson says race relations are improving in Sanford. "I do think it's getting better. When you have logical people that will listen to each other, and you're trying to figure out where they're coming from, and they're trying to figure out where you're coming from, that can only help to improve any type of relationship."

In Sanford, an event called "Band Together For Peace Against Gun Violence" will take place at the Goldsboro Welcome Center, from 2-6 p.m. on Tuesday.  People will also be gathering at the Seminole County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. before the hearing, to say a prayer in honor of Trayvon Martin and sing happy birthday.  The hearing takes place at 9 a.m.
