Short-term housing for homeless draws fire from neighbors

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Neighbors in Rockledge are raising concerns about  a local church's proposed plan to provide temporary short-term housing for the homeless as well as establish a resource center.

"I was very concerned about my safety and my daughters and my family so I wanted to talk to the neighbors and I realized that none of them knew," said Trish Tippins who lives near the proposed sight.

Tippins has already collected more than 300 signatures fighting against zoning for the proposed program which she and other neighbors feel will compromise their quiet community.

"We have a beautiful quiet neighborhood and since they've started the community garden we've had problem with vagrants, also people looking for the food pantry that they offer and coming in and out of our private property" Tippins said.

Grace Fellowship Church in Rockledge is one of 13 churches partnering with Family Promise of Brevard County Inc. -- establishing a family resource center for homeless families right next to the church on Murrell Road as well as home where they would stay for one week every three months.

" These homes that we're going to be using, they will not be homeless shelters, this will be a really strict program, for families to get into the program, there's a pretty strict vetting process so once they get in they'll be monitored closely," said Pastor Mike Bynum.

Bynum says no more than 14 people would be living in the home for that one week each quarter then they would rotate to a different church, and the family resource center would only be open during normal business hours.

"We'll have people at our church, staying with these people, the entire time they're on our property so we know how important it is to maintain the integrity of the neighborhood, of the safe community that we have," Bynum said

The program is set to start this coming summer, but first needs final approval from Rockledge city council members.
