It's German, meaning "Work will make you free." And those bold words were up in front of the Packard Automotive Plant in Detroit.
They have since been taken down, but the meaning still haunts those who saw it.
The exact same words mark the entrance to Auschwitz, an old concentration camp in Poland during World War II.
Police have no leads on who put up the sign.
Not only are the words a chilling reminder of the past, but the style is also similar. For example, the upper loop of the "B" in "Arbeit" is larger than the lower half, just like how it's written at Auschwitz.
The plant's attorney, John Bologna, said he was not aware of the sign until the Detroit Free Press contacted him.
The Jewish Civil Rights group, The Anti-Defamation League, also issued a statement condemning the sign:
"The prominent display of this quote at an historic Detroit landmark is disturbing and deeply offensive to victims of the Holocaust and to those who fought valiantly in World War Two."
