ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A middle school student was arrested on Monday after Orlando police said he brought a loaded handgun on campus. The 14-year-old Lee Middle School student was charged with possessing a firearm on school grounds, a felony.
Shortly before noon, another student notified a school resource officer that the teen had a gun.
Officers said they found a .25-caliber handgun with a magazine loaded with bullets in the student's waistband.
In a recorded phone message to parents, principal Howard Hepburn told parents, "I'm asking you to please have those tough conversations with your child about their decision making. We have great students, but one bad decision can de-rail their goals for a lifetime. They are surrounded and distracted by things in the media, and in everyday life, we never had to comprehend as kids."
Police will not say where this student got the gun or why he took it school. He will be processed through the juvenile courts.
