SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFoxDetroit) -
Louisiana Hines was one of the world's oldest people when she died here in Detroit just last Friday, February 1st.
At age 114, Hines was the world's sixth oldest living person, the second oldest living American, and the oldest living African American, according to the Gerontology Research Group. She has been the oldest person in Michigan since March 7, 2010.
And she had lived in Michigan since the 1940s. While living in Detroit, she had the opportunity to go to school for cosmetology. She opened her own beauty shop soon after on Detroit's east side. The shop has been closed for years, but she always maintained a current license.
She also served her church and community. She performed poetry and enjoyed salvaging what some would consider trash, but she turned them into works of art.
Her granddaughter, Darlene House told FOX 2's Alexis Wiley her grandmother's secret to living such a long life.
"It was nothing amazing that she had done, but God's work. And, her mother telling her at a young age that an obedient child would live a long life."
House added, "She talked about living the golden rule - doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. And when you think about that, there's really a lot in those few words. If you do that, then there's not a lot that you're going to do wrong."
Hines is survived by a 92-year old daughter, Allean Hines House; 13 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at O.H. Pye III Funeral Home, 17600 Plymouth Road in Detroit.
A family hour is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, before a noon funeral service at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church.
