DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -
A Douglas County teenager, accused of stabbing his great-grandmother to death with a sword, pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, during his court appearance on Wednesday.
Gavin Prince, 16, faced malice murder and aggravated assault charges stemming from the August 2011 attack.
The District Attorney says Prince started attacking his family members after his grandmother wouldn't let him play a video game on the computer. He says Prince attacked his grandmother, Laura Prince, with a knife. She barricaded herself in a bathroom behind a door.
When Prince tried to get to his grandmother, the District Attorney says he grabbed a sword and stabbed his great-grandmother, 77-year-old Mary Gibbs.
Prince's grandmother testified during the proceedings.
"I love my grandson. I always told him I will always love him, no matter what. The
first thing he asked, 'Is this over?'" said Laura Prince.
Mary Gibbs has a son, David Cook. He spoke with the court, and says he was not pleased with the sentence, believing someone else is responsible.
