Central Florida ladies line up for 'hair botox' treatment

SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Think your hair needs some help?  Your skin, eyes, and lips aren't the only body parts that may need a little boost as you age.  A brand new hair treatment has first hit shelves in Central Florida salons!

The product is called "Hair Botox" by RG Cosmetics. Three local salons are some of the first in the country to try it.

Saniece Hunter runs the salon "Hair Eye Am" in Sanford.

"We can't even keep it on the shelf," said Hunter. "We have people coming in and wanting 'Botox' all the time."

The product works by putting the collagen back into the hair.

"No matter what race, what color your skin, if you have hair, you need Hair Botox," said Hunter.

To see if it could really turn back the brush of time, we tested it on four people: a child with tighter, kinkier curls; a mother with looser curls, a young lady with bleached, damaged hair, and an expecting mom with color-treated hair. The application process is simple, but local distributor and educator Rocco Dibenardo said it must be applied in a salon.

"It's a restorative system developed in Brazil to make the hair in better condition and the side effects of it are a smoothing, that naturally occurs, during the process," said DiBenardo.

The treatment uses glycolic acid to help drive collagen into the follicles. However, Hair Botox is formaldehyde-free, which means it's safe for children and pregnant women. Still, only a professional stylist can administer the treatment.

"We all went through a certification process through the company," said Hunter.

The process itself is fairly simple.

First, the hair is shampooed. Then, the product is measured out. Hunter charges $65 per ounce. Stylists measure out the product in front of the clients so each one can see exactly how much is used on his or her head. Hunter said clients need anywhere between one and five ounces. The treatment is then generously applied. Stylists then leave the treatment on the hair for a period of time, anywhere between five and 45 minutes.

"Depending on how damaged the hair is," said Hunter. "Or if it's color-treated."

Sometimes the client is also placed under the dryer. The treatment should then tingle. Hunter said it's a sign the Hair Botox is stimulating the scalp.

"It's even good for people with scalp conditions: Eczema, Seborrhea, men who have thinning hair," said DiBenardo.

The hair is then blow-dried and styled as normal.

"You get an immediate results before you leave the salon," said DiBenardo.

All four women left the salon with shiny, smooth, and soft hair.

Stylists said it's safe to wash your hair the next day. The only thing is you should use a sulfate-free shampoo. Results lasts 10 to 12 weeks.
