NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A search is underway for a missing boater in Volusia County.

Bernardo Hernandez left his Apopka home 5 a.m. Wednesday morning to go fishing and has not been seen, or heard from, since.  Police found his SUV and boat trailer at a New Smyrna Beach lot near the causeway ramp.

"The family reported the boater was supposed to return around sunset and he never did," said Steve Van Norwick with the Florida Wildlife and Conservation Commission.

FWC and the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday searched the jetty area where Hernandez was known to fish.  They even brought in side scan sonar boats that can see underwater and have expanded their search area from the St. Augustine coastline to Port Canaveral.  In addition to this, they are also using helicopters for aerial surveillance.

"This area has a lot of greenery," said  Daniel Tobin with the U.S. Coast Guard.  "This boat is not large.  It's a 14-foot boat, and there's a lot of back waterways and everything else.  That's why we have helicopters looking.
