Woman Devastated After Dog Killed In Park By Hunter's Snare

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, N.J. -

What seemed like an ordinary day in the park with her dogs, turned out to be anything but ordinary for a South Jersey woman.

The woman, who doesn't want to be identified, spoke only to FOX 29's Claudia Gomez about the day her dog died in a hunter's snare.

The woman says she brought her two dogs to the Locke Avenue Park in Swedesboro, Gloucester County Wednesday morning. The woman says she was walking on a path when "Scooter," her Brittany Spaniel, disappeared.

A man walking the same path found Scooter under a bush. The dog appeared to have choked to death after being caught in a hunter's snare.

A hunter had placed the snare just off the path where FOX 29 found the remains of another animal that appeared to have died the same way.

The snare that killed Scooter had a tag on it, issued by the state indicating that the hunter has a license to trap.

Nonetheless, officers from the state's Division of Fish and Wildlife spent hours Thursday morning searching the brush for other snares.

Woolwich Township, where the park is located, has an ordinance against trapping. Because of this, there are no signs warning dog owners of potential traps.

But because the hunter is licensed and because they wouldn't have seen any signs warning against trapping, they are not expected to face any charges.
