NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The National Weather Service sent out an emergency alert to cellphones on Thursday about the incoming blizzard. It was hard not to avoid it, that is, if you even got it. Not everyone did.

Tech expert Shelly Palmer says that whether you got the message or not, technology is playing a role in storm preparedness.

Take all the iPhone weather apps for instance. Many give alerts, others give a real-time look at the radar.

The city of New York is also using technology to give updates about storms and emergencies. One resource is called PlowNYC, which lets people to check on the status of snow plowing on their street. You plug in your address, and you can see where your street falls in terms of plowing priority. You can also track the plows.

Hopefully, the trains and subways will keep running. The MTA released a video on YouTube showing de-icing engines ready to roll in Coney Island.

Still, technology and 21st Century digital media can only do so much once the storm hits.
