FUTURE IDOL? Coon Rapids 7th grader a natural-born singer

It's not often someone who isn't even old enough to have a driver's license has more of their own memorabilia than people twice their age.

Then again, not every 12-year-old has the voice of an angel mixed with a heavenly dose of Motown sound.

Julius Andrews, nicknamed Baby J by his family, knew he wanted to be a performer when he was barely out of diapers. He started singing in talent shows in school and the state fair, leading to gigs singing the national anthem before Gophers and Timberwolves games by the time he was 8-years-old.

"What I like about singing is how it feels for myself and how it touches other people, and it's a great experience," Julius said. "Every time I perform I get kind of nervous, at first. Then when I get into the song, it's not so bad. Then I get comfortable and get into the music."

But Julius' greatest talent may be sounding like one of the greatest singers of all time – Michael Jackson -- When he was a boy.

"I think it's awesome to be compared to one of the best artists in the world," he said.

He not only nails every Jackson Five song he can find -- he seems to channel a young Michael every time he steps on stage.

"I remind J that it's a gift, it's a gift from God," said Julius Andrews III, his father. "It's a pleasure to watch him perform and touch people like that."

But even though he's accomplished a lot at a very young age appearing in Caroline or Change at the Guthrie, and just wrapping up a starring role in the Minnesota Opera's production of Doubt, he still finds plenty of time to act his age.

"I like to hang out with friends, play basketball and eat cheese and sing of course," Julius said.

"He thinks his job in the world is to bother both his sisters," said his mother, Stasha Andrews. "He's a regular little boy."

Which brings us to his favorite TV show: American Idol.

"I get jealous of the people because I can't wait to be on that show, and I like some of the artists that are on there like Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey," Julius said.

He won't have to wait very long. During a recent trip to Disney World, Julius won first place in a talent show called The American Idol Experience. The prize? A ticket to audition for the real show in three years when he turns 15.

"I think I would be able to make the audience feel my music like they've never felt it before," Julius said.

And maybe this little boy with the big smile, and even bigger voice, will make his dream come true -- right in our living rooms.
