A 7-year-old Kissimmee boy is in critical but stable condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital after being run over by car Friday morning. He was on his bicycle headed to school with his siblings when he was struck.
"They were on their way to school there was three children two boys and a girl, all siblings traveling together as they entered the marked crosswalk, which they have the right of way," said Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Trooper say the 67-year-old driver from New York was in the Bellalago gated subdivision driving Westbound on Bellalago Dr. in a traffic circle onto Valley View Drive when he hit 7-year-old Alexis Rodriguez who was in the crosswalk.
"Troopers believe that the child was actually kicked off his bike and then the SUV actually ran him over," said Montes.
According to troopers, the driver said he couldn't see the children in the crosswalk because the sun was in his eyes, still he will likely face charges. Neighbors in the subdivision say with all the children riding bikes and walking to school every morning drivers need to pay closer attention.
"You can't tell me that you didn't see a child, especially in here where there's a lot of kids coming and going to school, and this is actually a gated community," said neighbor Bob Dorwiot.
None of the other children were injured, troopers say the boy was not wearing a helmet.
