Police seek vandals who struck two Sanford churches

Posted: Updated:

Police are looking for the person, or people, who vandalized two churches in Sanford. They said graffiti was spray-painted on the buildings.

"I'm amazed that they would choose a house of worship to put graffiti on it," said Pastor Ron Williams with the Palmetto Avenue Baptist Church.

He said the church was tagged sometime Thursday night.

"It's kind of ironic, that it was the same night we had youth group on Wednesday night and this took place. So we're trying to reach these young people and provide a place for them to come so they don't get involved in things like this."

Seven different areas on church property were vandalized.  The suspects even went out of their way to climb on the roof to spray it with graffiti.  Sanford police officers are looking into whether or not this is gang related.  They said this isn't the only church hit with graffiti recently. The Nazarene Church on Sanford Avenue was also vandalized.

Pastor Williams said he would encourage the vandals to "come clean with God, but also with our church and the law." He added that it is important to respect one another, especially when it comes to religion. "It is a special place.  It is God's house, and we ought to have reverence for God's house.   Even if we don't believe in God, you have to honor a person's religious beliefs."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sanford Police Department at 407-688-5000.
