WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (AP) - New figures from Robins Air Force Base show a $1.6 billion drop in economic impact over the past year, but base officials say that's because of changes in how the number is calculated rather than job cuts at the base.
The Telegraph of Macon reports the base last week estimated its economic impact for the last fiscal was $2.9 billion. That's far below the $4.5 billion impact from the prior year.
Robins Air Force Base cut 681 jobs last year, mostly through voluntary retirement. But Scott Boyd, the base's cost analysis division chief, says the impact for the last two years was roughly the same.
He says the new number is lower because the base no longer includes things like retiree pay and medical benefits when calculating economic impact.
