Abandoned cars litter Suffolk County highway

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The snow may have stopped falling but it's going to be a while before things return to normal.

This was the scene that perhaps symbolized the wrath of the storm the best.

Hundreds of Long Islanders found themselves trapped on the roads. Rescuers were able to take stranded drivers to safety, but their cars were left behind.

Saturday, bulldozers were brought in to help remove the cars.

At least one death on Long Island is being blamed on the storm. A man died while shoveling snow in Suffolk County. Meanwhile, the cleanup continued Saturday night in particular, digging out all the cars that remained stuck in the snow.

It was like a traffic jam of abandoned vehicles on Route 347 in Lake Grove and earlier Saturday, a similar scene down the road, after another set of cars were stranded during the blizzard.

"There were hundreds of residents, literally, who were within miles on the eastern end of Long Island, of making their way back to their houses, when the snow just swallowed them up," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

Some rode out the storm huddled in their vehicles until being rescued Saturday morning, and taken to warming centers like the one at the Nesconset fire station.

That's where Kenneth Thompson and his Lincoln Towncar were stuck when the blizzard was bearing down on Long Island around 10:00 p.m. Friday night.

The Long Island Expressway and the Sunrise Highway were shut down during the storm because of all the stranded vehicles.

Saturday, extra crews, including snow plows and tow trucks were brought from Nassau County, New York City and upstate New York to help with the cleanup effort and long, hard hours of digging out.

"I want to applaud the first responders who were heroic Friday night," said Gov. Cuomo.

The L.I.E. was expected to be closed in both directions from Exits 57 to 73 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday as the cleanup and digging out from the storm continued.
