Ex-Florida GOP leader Jim Greer's trial starts today

Posted: Updated:

Jim Greer, the former chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, is set to go on trial on fraud and theft charges this morning.

The trial likely will include testimony that will make both GOP leaders and rank-and-file members cringe -- former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is just one of several high-profile politicians expected to testify during the trial.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, former Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, former Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon, former Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos, former U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney and former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux are listed as witnesses.

Jurors must decide whether Greer committed a crime by directing more than $200,000 of party money to his company, Victory Strategies LLC. Greer is accused of pocketing $125,000 from Victory Strategies, as well as $30,000 for conducting a poll that he allegedly never did.

Greer is facing six felony charges and faces up to 75 years in prison.

Fox 35 reporter Mike Synan will be in the courtroom today, and MyFoxOrlando.com will provide a live stream of the trial. Check back for updates.
